Adult braces have always been the most effective way to straighten your teeth after adolescence. But what a lot of people don’t know is that they have managed to be on trend in some way over the last decade.
This flies in the face of common knowledge that braces are for nerds or that you shouldn’t have them fitted as an adult. Most people are apprehensive about the prospect of adult braces without knowing that they have emerged from their status as a source of embarrassment, as something that could and should be considered.
Aside from the simple fact that they can give you a beautifully straight smile, they also have the ability to dramatically improve your oral health by making it easier to brush your teeth. Depending on which treatment you receive, you could have your ideal smile within 18 months.
During a time when most people would have despaired at the thought of getting braces later than usual, teens in Thailand, Indonesia, Cambodia and other parts of South East Asia embraced orthodontic treatment as a fashion accessory. In 2006 the trend of having fake or ‘fashion’ braces was being spread at a rate of Knots by a newly burgeoning social media influence to the point that people purchased unregulated faux orthodontic materials which even included treatment from unlicensed dentists.
Of course, this was highly illegal and dangerous, and efforts were made to shut it down fairly quickly. But fake braces adorned with Mickey Mouse, football team crests and luminous colours persevered as a trend for years in the region and to the bafflement of real dentists who had to turn people away because they didn't need them.
In 2015 model Kitty Hayes appeared on the cover of CR Fashion Book to much media interest. Designer Shayne Oliver sent a squad of models down the runway in grills and braces for his Fall/Winter show. The premise of adult braces in the fashion world was to embrace our imperfections and how we dealt with them and represented a new way of seeing beauty in an industry rightfully called out for setting unhealthy standards.
Hollywood A-listers have also delved into adult braces with Gwen Stefani, Tom Cruise and Faith Hill all being some of the big names who decided to receive treatment in the later 90’s early 2000’s. Gwen Stefani seemingly having been influenced by the aesthetics rather the function of adult braces. We won’t fit braces so you can put them on Instagram, but at least you know that famous people think they are cool.
Once your braces are fitted, we would ideally like to see you every 6-8 weeks. However, depending on what is happening at the different stages of your treatment, we may need to see you more frequently (4 weekly) or perhaps less often (8-10 weeks).
We offer a comprehensive range of adult braces and orthodontic treatments that can give you the straight smile you have always wanted. Traditional metal braces are still the most effective way to correct major alignment issues in your teeth and bite and use wires and brackets to shift your teeth. Lingual braces are just as effective and work the same as metal braces, but they are fixed to the back of your teeth meaning they are almost completely out of sight. Invisalign are clear 'invisible' aligners that are removable but must be worn at all times except for when eating and drinking.
Once your braces have come off, you will progress to the “retainer” phase of your treatment. We will welcome you back to our Office for 6 monthly checks for the next 2 years to maintain your beautiful new smile. However, you will need to continue, indefinitely, to wear retainers for very small, regular periods of time, to ensure that your teeth stay in their new position.
When you click submit, you will be taken to our live calendar to choose your preferred appointment time.
